Theopening of fishing is one of the most anticipated moments in a fisherman's season. It sounds for many the resumption of fishing for their favorite species. However, the opening of fishing obeys well-defined rules that it is important to specify each year, especially for amateur fishermen who are not necessarily familiar with the fact. Here are the details to know for the opening of fishing 2019.
For novice anglers, first know that our French waters are listed in two distinguished categories. 1st category waters and 2nd category waters.
A first class river or watercourse corresponds to a river or stream where the fish population is mainly composed of salmonids (trout, grayling, char, huchon).
This type of watercourse is often referred to as " trout river »Or river with dominant salmonids.
A second-class river or stream corresponds to a river or stream where the fish population is mainly composed of cyprinids (roach, bleak, carp,…) and predators (pike, pike perch and perch, black bass, catfish).
In 2nd category waters, fishing is authorized all year round. However, exceptions exist for certain species. In 1st category waters, the regulations are stricter. Indeed, the fishing opening period is limited to part of the year.
The opening dates for fishing in 2019 take into account the reproduction cycles of the species concerned. Failure to comply with them exposes you to a fine of up to 450 euros.
Please note that the 2019 fishing opening dates indicated below may be modified locally. In particular, the prefect has the power to extend or reduce authorized fishing periods or to prohibit certain forms of fishing. It is therefore advisable to contact an approved fishing association in your department to find out the exact dates applicable near you.
The opening of trout fishing is the first opening of the year and is the symbol of the opening of the fishing season in France. For 1st category waters (mainly populated by trout), the authorized fishing period is set at second Saturday of March, i.e. Saturday March 9, 2019. The closure of the trout fishery will take place on 3rd Sunday in September, i.e. Sunday September 15, 2019.
The second biggest date in a fisherman's calendar coincides with the opening of the pike fishery. In 2nd category waters, the opening period for pike fishing in 2019 goes from May 1, 2019 to Sunday January 26, 2020. To see a little more clearly on the dates, pike fishing opens on May 1 of each year. The closure of the fishery is done on last Sunday of January.
On a national level, all the other predators (catfish, zander, perch and black-bass) are not “supposed” to be protected by a fishing opening and closing period. These can be fished all year round provided you do not use fishing techniques likely to catch pike during the closed period: lure fishing, live fishing, fishing.
Be careful though, some federations take local measures to protect predatory fish and offer opening and closing dates for fishing specific to each department.
It is therefore advisable to contact an approved fishing association in your department to find out the exact dates applicable near you.
Fishing for grayling is authorized from Saturday May 18, 2019 to Sunday September 15, 2019 in 1st category waters. For 2nd category waters, the dates go from Saturday 1May 8, 2019 to December 31, 2019.
Fishing for salmonids (brown trout, char, arctic char and cristivomer) and rainbow trout fishing are authorized from Saturday 9 March 2018 to Sunday 15 September 2018 in 2nd category waters.
With regard to eel and migratory fish (Atlantic salmon, big shad, feint shad, sea lamprey, river lamprey and sea trout), as vulnerable species, specific fisheries provisions are in place at the local level.
It is therefore advisable to contact an approved fishing association in your department to find out the exact dates applicable near you.
Fishing may only be practiced in the period between a half an hour before sunrise and an half an hour after going to bed.
The prefect can however locally authorize night fishing for certain species (carp for example). Special schedules can also be adopted for certain species.
* Numerous exceptions exist concerning the opening dates and catch sizes according to the departmental federations. Please check with your AAPPMA.
