Golden Dorado, the stealthy gold bar

Hello friends! We meet again to talk about a fish known for its flamboyant color: the Golden Dorado. Its scientific name is “Salminus brasiliensis”.
This fish is present in a few countries of South America, such as Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay. The team Rodmaps had the chance to meet him twice. The first time in 2012 in Argentina and most recently in 2019, still in the same country.

Morphology of Golden Dorado

Its golden color is the first thing that stands out in Golden Dorado. And yet, other characteristics should be remembered, such as the hardness of its bone structure. Hard as a rock, the hooks have great difficulty in entering the jaw, which is very frustrating given the number of fish landed.

Its body is also very dense and particularly muscular, which is normal because it is a migratory fish that moves in areas of strong currents.

How to fish for Golden Dorado?

The Golden Dorado behaves similarly to our brown trout. It protects itself in the counter currents created by various obstacles such as rocks, dead woods or water lilies. Always cast your lure upstream of the structure so that it is always presented in front of your eyes.

Regarding artificial baits, we recommend dense 130mm jerkbaits that are generally used on tuna hunts, large cranckbaits with strong vibrations and lipless! The surface decoys worked, but in areas with very little water.

For the line we recommend the braid in 40lbs or 50lbs. Bottom line steel is highly recommended or fluoro 100lbs because its teeth are relatively sharp.
